How to make an original Advent calendar for children and adults

Chocolate Advent calendars have their charm, but in our house we discovered years ago that joy can be created in other ways. Every day a small surprise that pleases, surprises and sometimes even makes us laugh. And from this a tradition was born, which is still with us today - even though our daughter is no longer a little girl.
Advent calendar for children and adults

Every December starts the same way at our house. We turn on the lights, light up the little tree, and in the corner is a wooden chest. At first glance, it's just a decoration, but those who know it know that the magic of Advent is hidden inside.

We started this tradition when my daughter was little. Instead of the usual chocolate calendar, we created our own version – Advent treasure chestEvery morning a small gift or surprise appears in it, sometimes something sweet, but mostly something meaningful and thoughtful. And I have to say that even after years, it is the best part of Christmas for both of us.

💡 What led me to this?

When my daughter was about eight years old, we went for the classic – chocolate Advent calendars from the store. Every morning, open the window, get a little sweet and off to school. It was nice, but after a few years we noticed that the joy lasted about two seconds – and then it was gone. No surprises, no magic. Just routine in a paper box.

My wife then came up with the first change. She came up with a handmade Advent calendar – made from toilet paper rolls, wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper and arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree. It had a touch of whimsy, it was handmade and my daughter was totally excited about it at the time. But… as time went on, it started to have its limits. Some gifts simply didn’t fit into those small rolls and over the years we were more concerned with logistics than the magic of Advent.

And then it came.
At the same time, I started doing something like this at home decorative Christmas shelf, with a tree, lights and decorations. And then it hit me – what if I added a little chest and put a surprise in it every day?
It's been our tradition ever since. Every December, the chest has its place of honor, and every morning something new awaits inside. A small gift that will please, make someone laugh, or simply make their day more pleasant. Today, this chest looks something like this – and maybe it will be an inspiration for others too.

Advent aka treasure chest

🧰 How it all works

Every December we transform one corner of the apartment into a little Christmas ritual.
On a wooden shelf stands a chest, a small tree and lights in cotton wool that imitates snow. In the evening everything is lit up and plays with warm colors, in the morning it has its own magic – silence, lights and anticipation of what is hidden in the chest this time.

Every day my daughter finds something new. Sometimes it's a small gift - like a phone case, socks with a favorite character or a special edition of Red Bull that you can't usually find in our country. Other times it's a candy or a small thing that has more of a symbolic meaning. All of it together makes up a mix of surprise, joy and atmospherewhich will last all of December.

📅 How to prepare it

  • 🎁 Planning begins in October or November at the latest.
Some things are ordered from abroad, others are obtained gradually.
  • 🧠 Distribution of gifts: Smaller surprises at the beginning of December, bigger "hits" towards the end - for example, a Santa Claus package on December 5th or a collector's item on December 24th.
  • ???? The entire environment plays a big role: Decorations, lights and the overall atmosphere do more than the gifts themselves.
  • ???? By the way: The chest also serves as a beautiful Christmas decoration — in the evening it looks more impressive than any commercial calendar.

⚖️ Advantages and disadvantages of Advent

✅ Benefits

  • It has personal charm – you choose every gift with the other person in mind.
  • Advent will change into a small daily ritualthat unites the family.
  • You can customize the calendar to suit age, interests, and style (children, teenagers, adults).
  • It creates memories and emotionswhich no chocolate can replace.
  • And bonus: it looks beautiful Christmas decorationthat will brighten up the apartment.

⚠️ Disadvantages

  • It is needed start preparing in advance, ideally in November.
  • Sometimes it takes more time and thought – especially if you want things to fit perfectly.
  • And yes, sometimes you can't help but "overshoot" a bit and end up spending more than you planned. 😄

🎁 My tips for young and old

It must be said that the whole magical effect of Advent with the chest is mainly based on the atmosphere. Every evening I refill the chest - and in the morning a new surprise awaits there.
The winter season is perfect for this. It's still dark in the early morning, so when we leave the tree lit and the lights in the artificial snow, the whole scene seems almost magical. The child wakes up, the lights come on, and everything around goes silent for a moment - simply a moment that has a soul.

🧸 How to create an Advent shelf

Basic decorations can be found really cheaply.

  • Male figurines, sleds or decorations you buy in stores like Kik, Pepco or at Vietnamese vendors - they often have beautiful little things that look like they're from a Christmas market.
  • Imitation snow I make from scratch bandage cotton wool – it looks natural, it is cheap and can be shaped.
  • Light? All you need is a short LED string of flashlights, ideally in warm white. Combined with the tree and the box, it will create an atmosphere that you wouldn't buy in a store.

🧠 Tips for choosing gifts

The search for surprises always starts in November - it's not possible before that because I order some things from abroad.
Pro smaller children It's easier – almost anything will make them happy: figurines, small toys, room accessories, or something themed with their favorite character.
U older children and teenagers We think more – we choose things that make sense. Something useful that will please them and is also useful: for example, cosmetics, small electronics, mobile phone accessories or something for school.
Of course, a little sweet never hurts, but the main "course" consists of small gifts that have a thought. And it's up to each of you what you choose for your child.

🎇 Advent calendar with the soul and spirit of Christmas

Today our Advent chest has become family tradition. One that anyone can adapt – a small child, a teenager, an adult. Yes, it takes a little more time, planning, and thought, but that's what makes it special.

Thanks to this tradition, we enjoy the pre-Christmas period much longer – not just the three days when everything culminates, but the whole of December. Every day has its own little moment of joy, anticipation, and well-being.

And perhaps that's where the magic lies. It's Advent traditions with the spirit of Christmaswhere it's clear at first glance that you really care about the other person. ❤️

And my additional tip. We bought a cosmetic Advent for my wife and to make it more than just that, I also decorated her Advent shelf. You know how it is. In addition to children, women also like gifts :-D

Great tip, I haven't seen this before. 😁 I probably won't be able to do it this year, but we'll do it next year. The little one will be thrilled. 😍😇
